Healthy Vegan Orange Grapefruit Smoothie Bowl

It’s been a little while since I posted a smoothie bowl recipe! I don’t know if you’ve noticed yet but popular smoothie bowls are almost always vegan – I guess it would be a little interesting to top your smoothie bowl with some bacon (if that’s you, keep doing you boo boo, can’t nobody tell you nayfin)

Grapefruits are the definition of bittersweet – you either love ‘em or you hate ‘em. I remember posting this paleo summer grapefruit raspberry smoothie and I mentioned how anyone who could eat a grapefruit on it’s own is a bit of legend. Well, I’ve just crossed legendary borders because I have been eating grapefruits like oranges lately.

The trick to eating the grapefruit for those who need a work-around – just segment them! I realised the bitterness comes from the white skin of the fruit, once you take this off, the sweetness is beautiful. You still get a little bitterness but it’s not overwhelming. This is what I suggest for this Healthy Vegan Orange Grapefruit Smoothie Bowl.

To give this vegan smoothie bowl more of a boost (which is what vegans need a lot of), I added some superfood maca powder. Raw Maca is said to have some powerful health benefits, especially for women. Here are some benefits that I find extremely handy:

  • Improves energy
  • Source of Iron
  • Improves women’s menstrual health

These are just some and the last one is anecdotal but I can tell you that from using Maca *consistently* I have found that I benefit from all these three. It is also a great hormone balancer for both men and women!

One thing about using maca powder is you don’t want to heat, it is possible that some of the nutrients that it contains may get lost – using it in smoothies and smoothie bowls are a perfect way to get all the benefits!

Healthy Vegan Orange Grapefruit Smoothie Bowl

Healthy Vegan Orange Grapefruit Smoothie Bowl – filled with oranges, red grapefruit, peaches and a powerful superfood – raw maca powder!

  • 1 red grapefruit ((peeled and segmented))
  • 1 oranges ((peeled))
  • 1 peach
  • ½ cup of coconut milk ((or your fav milk))
  • 1-2 tsps raw maca powder ((optional))

To top :

  • Dried cherries
  • Paleo granola
  • Peaches
  1. Process all your ingredients in a high powered blender.
  2. Place in your fav breakfast bowl, add some toppings and enjoy!
